This summer, the manufacturers of infant acetaminophen (including Tylenol and similar store brands) will be phasing out the versions that we’re accustomed to. Traditional infant’s acetaminophen in the 80mg/.8 ml concentration with the little dropper that’s measured in .4 or .8 ml increments will no longer be sold. Instead, infant acetaminophen will now be packed with a syringe-type dispenser, and will come in a concentration of 160 mg/5 ml. In the long run, this will actually simplify dosing, because now there will only be one concentration of acetaminophen sold (the 160 mg/5 ml strength.) But during the transition period, there may be both products available, and that may lead to confusion.
The bottom line: always read the label of the product you are using, and follow the directions on the package. If you’re in doubt, call us for dosing instructions. More information on this transition is available here.
